Journal Response - 11/8/22
Theory of Fun Chapter 10 dives into the parts of games that are not mechanics. The book calls it, the "dressing". Basically, games are much more than just mechanics. Everything from the story, graphics, and music all are parts of the dressing that compliment the mechanics and make up the game as a whole. It's important to decide what you use as the dressing of a game. For example, the book has a what if game where you must stack humans of all shapes and sizes down a hole in a gas chamber. If they stack up on each other high enough, they will reach the top and escape. If you fit them in tightly, the gas will kill those at the bottom and stop them from stacking. The game sounds repulsive and evil but what I described was in fact Tetris. The dressing you put on your game can vastly change the outcome and opinion on your game.
