Journal Response - 10/25/22
Level Up Chapter 9 focuses on Level Design. In this chapter I actually learned or I guess realized that levels aren't as basic as I thought they were. I originally thought that levels are areas where a player goes from point a to point but this is not the entire truth. Levels can come in the form of rounds, waves, stages, chapters, and maps. All of these types of levels are different from each other but they all still are levels. I knew they existed but for some reason it never clicked with me that they are also considered levels. The rest of the chapter dives into things I am familiar with such as themes, level names, foreshadowing, goals, pacing, and such.
The Trust Spectrum is a design framework that gives insight on designing multiplayer games. It goes into the social aspect of humans and how it correlates with games. A big part of multiplayer games is trust and the lack of trust. Trust in multiplayer games are categorized into three categories: Low Trust, Medium Trust, and High Trust. For Low Trust games, players are independent and are capable of doing things by themselves or doing things that other players can't. Sometimes the goals of players are even different. Medium Trust games see players with similar abilities and capabilities but some teamwork is required to progress. High Trust games have players with completely different abilities and capabilities. All players must work together and fill their role to reach their goal and winning by yourself is impossible.
